Here's a collage I recently created using heavy watercolour paper as the base. I prepared the background beforehand, using stained and torn Japanese washi and rice papers, and ‘found’ papers, such as torn shapes from newspapers and magazines, cardboard, paper lace, etc. (Some of these papers are absorbent so they can create interesting effects when adding inks later.)
In the studio, I then painted the figures from life, using watercolour and acrylic inks – and acrylic paint – using the shapes from the collaged surface to help create the final figures.
